چکیده

Charged colloidal dispersions and complex plasmas share the classical many-body character of strongly coupled systems but differ in their dynamics, which is overdamped in the colloidal and almost ballistic in the complex plasma case. In this paper, we shall discuss basic properties of charged colloids and emphasize in particular their link to complex plasmas. Similarities and differences between colloids and complex plasmas are discussed. In particular, the charging process in colloidal suspensions, their interactions and the Brownian dynamics is outlined.

Enhanced structural correlations accelerate diffusion in charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions.

Theoretical calculations for colloidal charge-stabilized suspensions and hard-sphere suspensions show that hydrodynamic interactions yield a qualitatively different particle concentration dependence of the short-time self-diffusion coefficient. The effect, however, is numerically small and hardly accessible by conventional light-scattering experiments. By applying multiple-scattering decorrelat...

Effect of geometrical confinement on the interaction between charged colloidal suspensions.

The effective interaction between charged colloidal particles confined between two planar like-charged walls is investigated using computer simulations of the primitive model describing asymmetric electrolytes. In detail, we calculate the effective force acting onto a single macroion and onto a macroion pair in the presence of slitlike confinement. For moderate Coulomb coupling, we find that th...

Electrostatic correlations: from Plasma to Biology

Electrostatic correlations play an important role in physics, chemistry and biology. In plasmas they result in thermodynamic instability similar to the liquid-gas phase transition of simple molecular fluids. For charged colloidal suspensions the electrostatic correlations are responsible for screening and colloidal charge renormalization. In aqueous solutions containing multivalent counterions ...

Ion specificity and the theory of stability of colloidal suspensions.

A theory is presented which allows us to accurately calculate the critical coagulation concentration of hydrophobic colloidal suspensions. For positively charged particles, the critical coagulation concentrations follow the Hofmeister (lyotropic) series. For negatively charged particles, the series is reversed. We find that strongly polarizable chaotropic anions are driven towards the colloidal...
